I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Worship Ministry. My first "real" job was as a Worship Pastor at a church in Moose Jaw, SK where we did church quite different than I've seen before. I was incharge of the band - yep, it was a band . . . drummer, electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, vocalist, and sometimes violin or even sax. This was such a great time - even though the only women were the vocalists (and even then they were all much younger than me - hee hee)
When I was in college I did a few Children's Musicals, which I loved directing, so with a friend's help we decided to do these again - and it was a blast!!! Those kids could sing and dance!!!
When I had my first child, Emma, I went on maternity leave and my husband took over the position at the church. He had just graduated and also was an essential member of the band (lead vocals/acoustic guitar) so it wasn't that big of a change for everyone.
After a while we ended up moving to Ottawa and it was here that I had my second child, Kaleb, and also took my training to be a Music for Young Children teacher. I had gotten back into teaching privately but it was harder to find students in a brand new town. My original thought was to continue teaching privately and start teaching the MYC way. Well - that didn't happen for very long because soon after teaching MYC I realized that those students seemed to have more fun learning and also retained more - which is a really good thing.
I quit teaching privately after that year and started teaching Music for Young Children exclusively and still am! It is a program that not only the kids enjoy, but I have a ton of fun teaching it too!
Oh, back to what went on - well, we stayed in Ottawa for about 5 years and then my husband got a job in Airdrie, AB so we went there for a couple years. It was nice being closer to our families and for the kids to have grandparents within driving distance (both sets lived in Saskatchewan), but we didn't end up staying there - as you probably have figured out. We did have our third child, Navia, there though - so now each of our children have their own "special" province as they were born in SK, ON and AB!
My husband took a job back in Ottawa and we moved back here January, 2008. We loved it out here the first time and this second time moving here kinda feels like moving back home (without the extended family though). This will be the first time I've taught from a home studio, but I'm thinking that it will be really nice not to have to leave early to get things ready, but instead I can just go downstairs while the babysitter watches the kids for me - sounds kinda nice to me!
And, now you know a bit about how I got here and a few things that I did getting here. It's kinda like me in a nut-shell!
